Olivia’s Whatchamacallit

For those of you who don’t know, Olivia (Liv) is my youngest sister and the fashionista of the family at best.photo (3)

She is precious, precious, precious (am I bias or what), and this Christmas I had had no idea what to get her, that is until I this came into my life.

Enter: The Thingamabob/ Whatchamacallit.

That’s just it, I have absolutely no idea what its purpose on this earth was for. I tried to Google it and asked friends from Lula B’s (antique mall) if they’ve ever run across such a different item before. NO LUCK!  I was thinking maybe an old news paper rack of some kind??? Seriously, nothing comes to mind. But the minute it entered my life (via a friend who knew I could pull something out of my hat to make it work), I knew exactly what it would be used for.

So here’s some background on the piece to give you a good idea of what we’re dealing with.  It is really short, maybe 3ft tall and from the bottom board to the floor is only 8”high. The depth of the board is only a foot and not very sturdy so it wouldn’t work for a bench. As far as length, it’s about 48” long. So it’s a real odd shape but I had plans…oh did I have plans.

I will interject that I didn’t get it to her by Christmas as originally planned and with my crazy schedule and our weather here in Texas, I just now FINALLY finished it.

Here is her new white and gold scarf rack:

(ahem…the scarves in the pictures are mine and about the only ones I own..again…She’s the fashionista!)

The thing about Liv is this girl is always dressed up!! She used to have a blog where she’d post all her different outfits and they were pretty darn awesome!!  She collects scarves among other things so I knew this would be perfect for her to hang all her scarves on. She even works for a company that sells scarves so I think this will work out just perfectly for her.

My favorite part of this odd guy, is it  blossomed into a beautiful, usable scarf rack!

…you see, we all do have a purpose in the world!

Vase, Voz…Potato, Potaaato

What do you do when you’re artsy fartsy and you just have to paint something?

Well, unfortunately, my family knows the answer to that question all too well because at some point or another, I have painted something of theirs and yes, sometimes against their will. (ButThat’sOnlyBecuaseILoveThemAndKnowWhat’sBestForThem!!!!)

Anyway, recently I’ve been wanting to put a couple of vase’s on my mantle and after Christmas, never got around to doing it. I’ve now learned through Cassie’s blog, that not only do I need this, but I need Pom Pom’s as well to give it that extra  special something.  I’m not sure Sammy will go for the pom pom’s so I’ll have to  incorporate those ever so slowly!!

Anyway, I looked around for some cheap vases I liked but haven’t really found anything that spoke to me (yes things speak to me) and also spoke my budget language. I was lucky enough to find these at target for $3.19 each. Since they were boring and in dire need of paint (muahhhahaha), I came to their rescue.

IMG_3277

I decided on a stencil form Lotta Jans Dotter that my sister bought me a couple of Christmas’s ago.

All I did was roll that sucker around my vase and tape it on. Now keep in mind that this was a 10 minute project (if that) so I wasn’t going for anything perfect, in fact, I kind of prefer things that way.

IMG_3303

Then I just took my paint marker and filled in the stencil and voilĂ , modern geometric vase(or VOZ) whichever you prefer.

I seriously don’t even think it goes with the off-white mirror I have sitting up there (hindsight) but they work for now ha ha!

….now for the pom poms….

Ike Is Quite a Handsome Fella

You met him a couple of months ago and you can read about our first meeting here.  Since then, he’s been sitting in a quiet corner of the house waiting for a much needed make over and for me to get my much needed meds straight so I could do him justice, which by the way I finally did!

If you don’t remember him, I found him in a back corner of Lula B’s and took him home with me. Excuse the IPhone pictures which I took at night by the way (don’t recommend that). He looked like this when I found him.

Now he looks like this!! (HEART, LOVE)

IMG_3267
IMG_3274
IMG_3259

And guess what? He’s all mine.  I’m keeping him for myself because I love him so much!

Now, I will tell you one thing I’m frankly pretty perturbed about and that is his back side.  If you remember before he had this split down the middle.  My original idea was to have beadboard cut to size and painted the same duck egg blue color you see above. Well that didn’t happen and I’ll tell you why in a sec. Then, I tried for another thicker grade of wood (again, tell you why in a sec), which was boring but could be painted.  NOPE, that didn’t happen either.  Which leads to why I went with what I did.

See, the thing is I LOVE HOME DEPOT. They have the colors I need, the credit card I hold, and the paint department peeps are my friends…BUT, and I mean BIG TIME BUT!! The customer service in the lumber department is horrible.  Now don’t get me wrong, there are a few people I’ve encountered that are great help, but sheesh, 8 out of 10 odds is pretty bad. I mean, help someone out!

So THIS time, I couldn’t find anyone in the department. When I went for help, they told me to try to chase the one guy on a fork lift to see if he could help me. SERIOUSLY?! Turned out he couldn’t. So finally after 20 minutes, I track down this guy that looked like he was 15 . He happened to be helping someone at the moment so I waited another 15 minutes for him to be done. When he was done, it’s like I was invisible. I had to raise my voice to this little pip squeak and say “Hello, do you think you could help me??”. He didn’t really help other than to say they couldn’t cut the wood I needed unless it was a 2x4. He called a few people but apparently the saw they have doesn’t cut anything in the thickness I  needed.  I was over it anyway so I left.

When I got home, I further investigated Ike’s backside. It was intact, just crappy but still sturdy enough. I went with it and gorilla glued a part back together which still left the inside unsightly.  SOOOO….I found some old textured wallpaper in my craft closet and lined it with that. And now he’s real purdy!

photo 1 (7)IMG_3263

I didn’t end up spending anything on him since I had everything on hand, however, the paint I used was CiCi Caldwell chalk paint which IS pretty pricey and WILL STAIN YOUR HANDS! I learned that the hard way and ended up with black tinted hands for about 4 days! Nice for work (right?!)and apparently a conversation starter.

I’m glad he is finally done and just in case you’re wondering, he’ll hold all of Sammy and my sweaters. Turns out we have a lot between the two of us and were running out of places to put them.

Have a great day!

It’s Friday, Let’s Paint Something!

creativityisintelligence

I was recently asked by a couple of friends if I was still doing my “Furniture Thing”. Yes, the answer is ALWAYS yes! One said she hadn’t seen much on my blog or Facebook posts(true) and the other basically wanted to know what furniture I had on hand that she could see and perhaps buy!

So just incase you’re wondering, yes, I’m still doing the “furniture thing” and in fact I’m kinda sorta in the business planning stage of it all. I lacked direction which I’m currently working on now. That being said, I’d prefer not to have too much on hand, as my house is small enough already and I’d love to move forward in the direction of “if you have it, let me see it and I’ll paint it for you”.  So I guess you could say, more custom orders.  This way I can still get my paint on, and won’t get in trouble with Sam every time he stubs his toe and asks “WHY DO WE  HAVE THIS HERE AGAIN???”

I’m also not a marketing professional so I have no idea how to sell myself. That’s where my friends come in, so friends if you’re listening, I need ya! Anyway, enough about me,(I’ve noticed how wordy I’ve become on here). Have a great weekend, create something and love somebody!!

Bye!

How Do You Paint?

Do you every pay attention to how you paint? Do you ever pay attention to how you hold a pen to write?  I got to looking at my hands when I was painting and noticed, though it varies in what position I’m in at the time, that I tend to grasp the hole brush in my hand (picture A) and never just by the handle (picture B).

A.
IMG_3206

B.
IMG_3211

I call picture B- the Mr. Miayagi way of holding it. Remember the “paint the fence” scene in Karate Kid? Long strokes up and down…no, before your time? Ok, well the way he had Daniel hold the brush was by the handle. I have trouble with holding the brush by the handle. I don’t feel like I have enough control of it. It just feels awkward to me.
I tend to hold the whole brush in my hand, or use my index finger like I would when I hold a pen. (picture C).

IMG_3212

This post really isn’t going anywhere other than to show you there’s no wrong or right way to paint. You should use whatever method works for you. It’s just like when you are writing and how the way you hold your pen affects your penmanship. Same concept and bottom line is do what works best for you. I’m sure the way I hold a pen differs from how you hold yours, right ?!

IMG_3203IMG_3207

You’d think the answer to this question is a given, but you’d be surprised how many times I’ve been asked that. Ok, it was maybe like 2 but still, you never know who is embarrassed to ask it so I thought I’d go ahead and nip that in the bud and answer it for you. I mean, what kind of friend would I be if I kept that information private. ; )

Remember, there is no such thing as a dumb question, and I’m not a professional, but I’ll always help, so keep the questions coming and if you leave it on a comment, make sure I can email you back. The “no-reply-blogger thing” is a pain in the patoot and I can’t answer you that way. OR if it’s easier email me rdmireles@gmail.com.

Thanks for listening to this not so brilliant post hee hee!

What I’ve Learned About Painting Furniture

…well a lot of things, but one thing in particular is I really love the painting part, just not the mending part. I can paint to my heart’s content in any color, any hardware, and any finish I choose, but the one thing I’m finding more and more that I don’t like, is all the fixing. I used to think if it was broke, I COULD FIX IT (said to the tune of Wreck-It Ralph). Yeah not so much.  Gluing… yes, gluing is my thing.

IMG_3220

Don’t get me wrong, I like fixer uppers, but I’m getting less fond of the “fixing” these days. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve nailed through furniture I was working on, squashed my finger with a hammer, stapled and it didn’t go all the way through so I had to hammer the dang thing in…sometimes it’s awful. I just don’t like it. And yes I see lots of people (girls in particular) with table saws (I should never be around one of those) or nail guns, and blog posts that read “easy DIY…” and to that I say, “You Go Girl!”, More power to you and I salute you! You are WOMAN, I will hear you ROAR from your workshop consisting of fine workman tools…but for me…I will glue. I will staple and hammer it down but that is the extent of what I will be fixing because I want to keep my fingers!

So if you’re like me, don’t be ashamed that you “can’t” and work with what you “can”! For me it’s Gorilla Glue and a clamp and I’m not embarrassed to admit that!

My name is Rita, I like to paint, not so much fix, furniture, and this is my new motto:

“I GLUE, and that's good. I will never TABLE SAW, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.”
Thank you Wreck-It Ralph!

What Not To Wear When You Paint

I got to thinking about this yesterday when I was painting. We obviously have different outfits for different occasions, right?

Yoga

Yoga Outfits I want for Hot Yoga!!!
Swim Wear

LOLO Moda: Beautiful black & white swimming wear

Everyday Attire:

Cool fashion style, www.lolomoda.com

But what about painters? What do they wear? Well I can tell you what I wear, Ha!  So pay attention if you want to save yourself some time and grief:

IMG_3216-001IMG_3217-001

Yes that’s me in all my glory. And this is AFTER I’ve lost like 15 lbs!! Gosh I’ve got a long way to go!

So here’s my list:
1. Dress Comfortable- That’s a given, but you really don’t want to be too loose or too tight.
2. Wear pants/shorts that fit- You notice I have on draw string pants- You will do a lot of bending so you really don’t want to be pulling them up all the time. It’s just a big pain in the butt so I’d advise against it.
3. Wear clothes you will never wear in public- hence this attire I’ve had for years. Grant it, my shirt has stayed semi clean but these pants, they look REALLY bad!
4. Shoes- make sure they are comfortable, don’t come untied too easy, and again, something you don’t mind getting paint, in on and under. I don’t know how that happens, but it happens to me.  My shoes of choice are my 3 year old converse in size 5 1/2. YES, I have a very small foot!!
6. UNDERWEAR- We don’t think of this too often but this is very important!  FULL COVERAGE! I repeat, FULL COVERAGE! It goes a long way and again, all the pulling, yanking, tugging… no one has time for that.  You will bend, you will move all around, you will stretch, you will get into positions you didn’t think you could. The last thing you want to do is mess around with aggravating panties! Do yourself a favor, and say these words “cute does not equal comfortable”. Not in this case anyway. And if your top heavy such as myself, a good bra doesn’t hurt either!

I think that about covers it. Oh! and Hair! Just pull it out of your face. Remember what your momma said when she combed the living heck out of your hair and pulled it up into the tightest of tight pony tails. Get your hair out of your face dear!

Hope this helps and if you remember something that I’m missing, just let me know. I’m all ears!

Have a wonderful, sunshiny kinda day!

There’s No “Crap” In Art’s and Crafts

Even when you think it is crap, it’s not!

Case in point:
I had it in my mind to create an embossed picture to hang on my picture wall. I had the glass and frame, given to me by my precious cousin Julia, embossing spray I picked up at a yard sale for a quarter, my letters and tape. I was good to go!

I laid out all my materials, started taping off my glass and I used a ruler and everything. I was so proud of myself. Then I started spelling out my words.

If you follow me on instagram @ritamakessunshine then you saw my preparations.
photo 1 (2)   photo 2

That’s about as far as I got before the “crap” hit the fan!
When I went to spray my embossing spray….IT CAME OUT YELLOW!!!!  I had a can of YELLOW STAINED GLASS spray which tells me I obviously picked up the wrong can at that stupid yard sale AND on top of that, my picture was ruined. GASP!!
WHAT COULD I POSSIBLY DO NOW?! All I could think now was to hurry and wipe it down with a paper towel so that’s what I did. I took as much of the yellow (oily mess) off of my glass and had to come up with plan B. Oh and Sammy if your read this, I’m sorry again for taking my frustration out on you. It’s not your fault, I couldn’t even look past the fact that the lid on the spray can was YELLOW! HELLO, OBVIOUS! I was seriously a mess!

Plan B consisted of coating it with white spray paint which was all I could think of that would cover it, so I took it outside and painted it white.

I will say that after a few coats of spray paint, it was enough to cover BUT, you can still see this nonsense:

IMG_3196

Yep, that there is  left over yellow stained glass goo you’re looking at.

So, yes, I hate that I didn’t catch it previously and saved myself grief, but in the long run, this:

IMG_3194

doesn’t over take the look of THIS, in the grand scheme of things does it?!

IMG_3188

IMG_3186

Not to mention, it has a funny story to it. And who will look at it that close anyway, right? (Please don’t come to my house and look at it too close ok?) Thanks!
