Map Scrap Side Table

You saw my last post that had different map prints I framed to go in my living room, now here is one project I finished with the remaining paper.

I found this small table at a thrift store in Austin. It was cheap, cute and I could just see the possibilities so I bought it!

Lesson #1 for today- if it’s not breathing and it lives in a thrift store,  you have every right in the world  to take it home and paint it.

The only problem I saw with this table is the side was peeling off exposing the particle board. One thing you’ll see on this blog is I usually don’t let things like “it’s not real wood” scare me away from a transformation.  It’s harder but still doable.

Lesson #2 for today-  because a piece of furniture is not real wood does not mean you can’t change it up…you just have to be a little bit more careful.

The way I fixed it was I removed the part that was peeling. This left a jagged edge that I needed to be smooth so I sanded it down lightly to fix that problem. Once it was smoothed out, I painted the entire piece then added the map to the front drawer using 3M spray adhesive. I tried to Mod Podge it at first but I think the paper was too thick because it would not stick whatsoever. Needless to say I got frustrated and glued the darn thing into place. What can I say, sometimes I’m cool and calm, and sometimes not so much…bottom line is it worked like a charm!

Lesson #3 for today- think of paint and paper like make up. You can always cover up that blemish and no one will know the wiser unless you tell them.

Lesson #4 for today- remember if at first you don’t succeed, use any means necessary to get there!

In all, I’m happy with the result and will add this little guy to “things to sell”…eventually.

*disclaimer- I am not a professional nor do I claim to be. I’m just a girl who likes to paint pretty furniture, dance to the beat of her own drum and make the world a happy place.

Fulfilling Frame Fix

You know that feeling you get when you want to do something, anything creative but you don’t know what it is and you’re to lazy to figure it out???? Well goodness almighty that’s where I’ve been this past week!! I just needed a small little creative fix without busting out the tarp, tools and paint cans.

I actually had this in the back of my mind to do but hadn’t gotten around to it. Now I’m glad I did!

I don’t remember if I mentioned while we were in Austin, Sammy took me on a day of THRIFTING. Yes… A DAY OF THRIFTING (sound gates of heaven opening and little angels singing)!! Unfortunately, he didn’t quite share my enthusiasm as he asked to use my hand sanitizer a few times and even at one point said I should be wearing gloves.  It sometimes cracks me up how different we are. I’m in hog heaven while he’s kind of in hell :( I do have to say that he was a great sport about it!

In one of the thrift stores we visited, I found these great frames for $5 each. They were a great size and too good to pass up so I bought them.

I had already envisioned using these to place over the stupid ugly Ikea shelf in my living room that Sammy wants to keep. I really don’t hate it that much, I guess I just hate the idea of it if that makes sense?? It’s basically everything I don’t like in furniture…too new, way to straight lined, DARK BROWN (blagh!), no character…Ok I guess I do hate it but that’s not the point! The point is, with any marriage, you have to compromise. He wants to keep the shelf, I hate to look at it so I’m adding something nice to that area!

What I decided on were these three map prints my sister Olivia gave me for Christmas. They are perfect to add to a cool piece of furniture which I still intend to do however, I knew they’d be perfect for my pictures as well.

I measured the size of the frame and subtracted 4 inches to get the size I wanted for the print.  This would allow for 2” on each side.  The good part was I just used the paper that was already in the frame as the background. I just turned it around and used the white side then centered the map and taped it down using double sided tape.

While I cut and taped, I had Ashley paint my wood frames. We picked a kind of tan color that would pop against the wall but still tie into the maps.

I still need to add some small things to put on top of this shelf but that’ll come later. For now I can at least just smile when I look over at that area and see these pretty pictures smiling right back.

If I Were an Animal, I’d Be A Unicorn

I hit a wall today and being the girl that I am, I question myself a lot about a lot of things. Granted, for the most part I think I’ve come a long way from the depressed lunatic I was in December but then my baby turned 17 and it all hit me…she’ll be out of the house soon and then what? I started to ask myself things like what will I do, who will I become, if I were an animal what would I be?? I’m just kidding on that last one, but since I’m on the topic of ‘questions’ I hope you’ll let me ask you a few questions and humor me by answering at least a couple of them in the comments below.. come on you know you want to…

If you can’t comment below, you can go to my FaceBook page and play along there too!

Here they are:

1. If you were an animal what would you be and why (mythical creatures are accepted)?  EX. My answer is a unicorn because they are strong, whimsical and graceful but they have a horn on their head to poke someone if they get out of line.

2. If you could share a talent or passion of yours with the world and get paid bookoos of money for it,  what would it be and why?

3. If you could share one quote that you would love your children to live their life by, what would it be? (your own quote is accepted and even better in my opinion)

4. If you’re a mommy to a dog or cat and could literally have a conversation with them for one day, what would you talk to them about?

5. If you met me for coffee, what is one thing you think I NEED to know or that we NEED to talk about?

Ok so those are my totally random questions for the day that all stemmed from Brianna turning 17- that’s just how my crazy mind works! Do me a favor and play along. I think we all need a little “play time” in our lives and more often than not, we try so hard to get our brains to think clearly we forget about thinking creatively. And if you want to take it step further, copy my list and add to your Facebook page. It’ll be fun to see what your friends say. If you do let me know so I can see too!
