Saying Goodbye to Lula B’s

I decided this weekend that I’m going to give up my space at Lula B’s at the end of this year.  It’s been a year since I signed my lease and believe me when I say I have learned so much, laughed so much and added a year full of great memories being a part of that group.  Unfortunately, sales have gone way down and I’m putting so much money and time into it, that after doing the “numbers”, it’s just not working out in my favor.

Soooo…what does that mean for my furniture??  Well I still plan on doing furniture, just a lot less now. At least I say that but who the heck really knows what the future holds.  And as for the booth, I’ll be having a major sale in November and December to clear out what I can. The rest will be in my Etsy shop which will still be available.

Honestly, I was really wasn’t as heavy hearted as I thought I’d be and like I said, after doing the math and thinking “oh crap, I sure as heck ain’t showing Sammy”… that was the defining moment so to say!

Forgive the iphone pics but these are some of my current vintage finds I have in my booth.  Remember they are all going on sale so if your in the area…RUN DOWN THERE!

I could share some crazy stories I’ve had the pleasure of encountering during my stay at Lula b’s,  like the guy wearing the tutu, or being asked what our Spaghetti policy was while being filmed, or trying to take a shirt off a mannequin and ending up with multiple pieces of her…you know that sort of thing. Or how I learned some cool stuff like Jadeite stones should be cool to the touch, so if you plan on buying one, touch it first.  If it isn’t cooler than room temperature, it isn’t real(isn’t that a cool tidbit).

Not to mention, I’ll have to learn to tame the inner “estate sale buyer” in me so that she won’t try to  tackle people in line when cool vintage mugs are for sale.  That will most definitely be the hard part!!  I think I’ll just have to mange.

Thanks again for the love and support with my booth, I will always, always appreciate you!

…and then there was a Bookcase!

Last week I posed a challenge to get one thing off of your list with me. I had a bookcase I’ve been NEEDING to get done for a friend at Sammy’s job. I don’t know about you, but if creativity doesn’t strike immediately things just tend to sit and wait for it…and sometimes that takes longer than expected!!  Which poses another question.  What’s the longest you’ve had something on your “gonna get to it eventually” list. Gosh I’m not even going there with that one!

The bookshelf I found was great for my friends daughter’s room.  She wanted it personalized and other than that, I had free reign but unfortunately, that, didn’t even go as planned.

IMG_2566IMG_2567

Ok totally off subject (as I sometimes do) but do you see that tarp I have under the bookshelf??  That sucker is huge and I had to fold it a few times which was a major pain in the behind.  So one day I happened over to Home Depot and bought a small, like 5x5 one and it is amazing. I can toss that puppy over my shoulder and take it anywhere!  It makes all the difference in the world!  I don’t quite know where I was going with that but, isn’t it funny how difficult we make things on ourselves?

Note to self…simplify!

Now as for the shelf, I wracked my brain trying to come up with a concept and the deadline didn’t help! After inspecting this bookshelf, I realized that there were LOTS of not so pretty parts that paint wasn’t gonna fix so rather than beatifying them I opted to cover them up.  Did I mention I was on a time crunch?! I had extra piece of cute fabric and took that route instead.

Also, since I took so long I gave my friend a small bench I picked up this weekend.

WARNING- This is really ugly!

IMG_2736IMG_2737IMG_2740

I didn’t get to personalize them because I felt they already had a lot going on with that floral print but I think it looks good regardless! Plus the girls were happy!

What do you think?

and for those of you who contributed…thank you SO MUCH and I appreciate each one of you!!

LOVE ALWAYS,

Holli’s Hip House Décor (damn it…I couldn’t think of another “H” word!)

Sweet Holli from Holli’s Hoots and Hollars (is that name not precious!!) wrote me with her challenge piece. I have to say I was excited to see the before and after of her projects because I myself have not conquered painting a chandelier. But hers came out awesome and I loved the way she covered each crystal in foil so she didn’t have to take off each individual one. Very resourceful girl!!

She also tackled two projects so here they both are!

And this is my fav because it’s so darn creative!!

photo (1)

See told you!  Isn’t that an awesome great idea!! Love it Holli and thank you SO much for contributing!!!

That’s the last of my challenge takers. My sister was supposed to tackle her project for me but she didn’t have time. So come back tomorrow for my final bookcase project.  Let’s just say it didn’t come out at all like it was supposed to and there was a small bonus as well…..intriguing….

See you tomorrow!

Julissa’s Two-fer’

Now you know I’m all about my furniture pieces, so when someone like Julissa emails me and says “I have a garage full of furniture “(note to Julissa’s husband –  some of the best women I know are furniture hoarders!) I’m like “show me what you got!!!”.  I know there are people like me who want to scour other peoples garages too, right?! Well, she ended up sending me a couple of projects she cranked out so we’re in for treat today.

First is this awesome MOD PODGE table she did in blue. This is what she started out with:

photo 1photo 2

She picked up this table for free and what’s better than furniture to refurbish?????
FREE FURNITURE TO REFURBISH!!!   A girl after my own heart.  '

Here it is now!!

photo 5 (1)

LLLOOOOVVVEEEE!!! And I especially love that she opted to mod podge scrap book paper in the middle of this table. It really brings out the square detail that wouldn’t have packed as much punch if she went with a solid color!! BRAVO! You really knocked it out of the park with this piece!

And next is this table and mirror that she added to her living area:

And here they are now!

(HI JULISSA)

I think my favorite part of this last project is they didn’t go together first but now match beautifully!!

Thanks Julissa for taking on my challenge full force and hopefully dwindling down your furniture projects so you can make room for more…ahem…I mean…clean out that garage!!

See you tomorrow for another Challenge taker!

Tami’s Beautiful Blue Chair

One of the best things about having a blog is the people you meet along the way. I don’t quite remember when I met Tami from Curb Alert,  but it wasn’t hard to see right from the start, we were SO alike on SO many levels.

For example:
She is a Texas girl, I am a Texas girl.
She has daughters, I have daughters
She picks up curbside treasures, I pick up curbside treasures
She has a husband to tolerates her hobby (habit), I have a husband who tolerates my hobby (habit)

You get the idea! And though we haven’t met each other in person, I think this friendship will last a loooong time!

She makes the best furniture transformations and is currently sprucing up her new home with her creative touch! So when I had this “to do list challenge” on my blog, I quickly twisted her arm to join me and I’m so glad she did.  When I say she is talented, you have no idea.

Here is her chair she started with:

Ugly Chair 1

Not so bad…right??? Well check out the back:

ugly chair 2

Perfect for this era?? I think NOT!

I didn’t know the extent of what she would do with it, but  man did she blow me away with her new blue chair.  By the way I think Brianna(my youngest daughter) would LOVE this chair!

Check it out now!!!

She posted all about how she did it, so make sure you check it out here, and if you have time you’ll want to peek around her blog, you’ll be glad you did! She has awesome how to’s, furniture transformations and more. Just make sure you say Hi from me!

Thanks again Tami, I’m so glad you were up for my challenge and not to mention you go one more item crossed off that list!!

Thanks for stopping by!

Sam’s Sweet Sewing Skills!

Once upon a time there was a sweet gal named Sam.

Sam liked to sew beautiful blankets, bags, and clothes.

Sam also like to offer her services to her friends, which was very nice of Sam.

Until one day, Sam had a lot on her plate.  She wanted to get everything done, but didn’t have enough time or energy to finish.

Sam’s friend Rita heard of her dilemma and out of the goodness of Rita’s heart, she helped Sam by challenging her.

Rita said “Dear Sam, I will  help you by having a challenge on my blog and holding you to it. But do not fear, for I have your best interest at heart”…and that she did.

Sam had to finish some embroidery on a couple of bags and shirts. Rita gave her one week to see what she could do and Sam did just that!

Sam worked from dusk til dawn, while still being a mom, grandma, wife, caretaker, sitter, cab driver, and STILL working on sewing:

She sewed bag after bag:

And shirt after shirt:

And never really quite knowing how fantastically beautiful her creations were…until her lovely, caring, UN-vain friend Rita told her so. Sam was truly gifted and created such beautiful things and all the while maintaining the status of mother, wife, grandmother….  Her friend Rita said “SAM YOU ROCK” and they were friends forever!

The End.

Thanks Sam for playing along and I hope you liked my little story Smile

What Did You Accomplish This Week!!??

Yay!! What a fun “challenge”-ing week!!   So, did you finish what you said you would????  I’m finishing up mine today and will get some pictures snapped tomorrow for posting!!

I’ll also show you the before and after pictures that were sent to me from my peeps that were up to the challenge!

FIRST UP:

Cindy emailed me and said she was a beginner at this whole furniture refurbishing rigamarole but wanted to try her hand at a nightstand for her husband’s side of the bed. She purchased this yellow nightstand at Habitat for Humanity with that in mind.

photo (5)

Yeah, I love this piece but the color has to go, right??!!  Cindy had Black Milk Paint (uh…lucky!!) and painted it, distressed, then waxed the piece. The handles got a bit of an updating too.  I’d say she is quickly becoming a pro wouldn’t you??!

Here it is now on her husband’s side of the bed looking beautiful.

Thank you again Cindy for sharing your before and after with us!

See you tomorrow for more challenge pictures!

What Is My Challenge Piece For My To-Do List Challenge?

Does  your  ‘To Do’ list look like this?

image

Oh wait…that’s my list! The problem is, they are so vague and they can be time stamped anytime in the future and still work within the time frame of the title.  NOT GOOD!

I decided to get off my lazy behind and get some things knocked out so I simplified my list and only put some furniture pieces I wanted to get done.  You saw the first two and I’m about to show you the third piece.

This bookshelf has seriously been sitting around since before my surgery. It is for one of Sammy’s coworkers who I promised to get done for her girls and never finished..ugh!. She wants it to go in her daughters’ room so I need to personalize it for them. Problem is I haven’t had anything speak to me so I ‘m left with a blank canvas. In fact I still have NOTHING to go on and am terrified about this deadline I’ve given myself. I’m hoping that when I start painting it white (wow) something will hit! Until then this is a picture of my uphill battle:

IMG_2566-001IMG_2567

Now that I’ve showed you what I’ll be working on, let me tell you about a few friends that were UP to my CHALLENGE!!

CHALLENGE TAKERS!!

First up is my sister Andrea (Dre). She wants to fix up/clean out her garage. She’s a single mother of two brats…I mean wonderful children…so you can imagine what she’s up against.  I’m sure with proper payment she can get those two to crank it into high gear and get it done and off of her list!!Good luck Dre!

Second up is my friend Sam (Mom to fat dogs) I love that name!!  She actually gave me the idea when she mentioned she had SO MUCH stuff on her plate and needed to get them done. So what do I think…oh, ok, challenge haha! Love you Sam! Sam has worked on beautiful quilts and sews when she’s not chasing around grandchildren. I can’t wait to see what she makes!!

Third, is one of my newest followers, we’ve been chatting on FB – Julissa!  She is a furniture collector/hoarder like myself . I can say hoarder because she is a kindred spirit and knows I mean it with love!  She said she just got back from Goodwill with some great finds so she’ll show us what she does to them.

Fourth, is Cindy with her fab new nightstand. Cindy wants to paint it with Milk Paint (be still my heart) for her husband to use as a bedside table.  It’s gonna be awesome, I know it!

And Fifth is Holli with her her chandelier…I still have yet to tackle one myself but CAN’T wait to do one!!

Again, these are the ladies up for the challenge this week and I thank you all for playing along. Don’t forgot to send me a before and after picture.

Don’t forget it’s not to late to join in the fun so send me whatcha got!

The Knobless Dresser

First, thanks to those of you playing along with my challenge. I promise you’ll feel so much better about yourself when you finish that little project that’s been plaguing your mind for quite some time now. And then I’ll get to post about it and it will be even more wonderful!! Right!!??   More on that tomorrow!!

Today, I wanted to show you part two of my “To-Do List” that was crossed off this weekend.

As far as classification goes, I never really know what something this size should be called…dresser, night stand, table??? I just call it a dresser if it has drawers and looks like one, even if it is little, ha!

So here you have a dresser that I picked up for more than my usual 5 bucks. This guy was 8, and so well worth it with these bones, am I right?! He had everything going for him except for, well, no knobs and needing a paint job.

IMG_2701IMG_2703

FYI, it had two drawer pulls, one white knob at the bottom and that thing in the middle is a screw with a nut at the end.  Be still my heart (said sarcastically of course)!

I found some pulls in my stash that matched so I got lucky and used what I had. This is what it looks like now.

IMG_2711IMG_2714IMG_2716

He’s a Duck Egg Blue (not Annie Sloan…I wish) but I think he came out appropriately don’t you!

OK, get with it you all and send me a before shot of what you are going to work on this week and don’t forget I WILL post about it.  Send your “before” shot to rdmireles@gmail.com, even if it is something you haven’t sewn yet, a letter you haven’t written, or a shrub you’ve been dying to pull out of your lawn…send it to me anyway.  OH YAY so much fun!!

See you tomorrow!

1 down…500 to go–Challenge!

So I finally applied myself last week and managed to crank out a couple of projects. I have to say it feels great to get TWO things off of my list.

Today I’ll show you this little Garage Sale find for $5!!  It was love at first sight!

IMG_2721IMG_2726IMG_2722IMG_2730IMG_2723IMG_2731

At first I was going go use different knobs and then paint the entire piece a color to match the knobs.  When I told Ashley what I wanted to do, she said I should keep the knobs and the color choice would just come to me. Do you know that girl was right???!!!  Since when does she know more than me??  I looked over my stash of knobs and nothing really spoke to me. I knew I didn’t want to paint the entire thing one color because it would be too much and the knobs really felt like the needed to be painted….then it hit me!!  That beautiful wood needed to show through… so I sanded it smooth and covered some parts with Danish Oil. I painted the rest, including the knobs a gray color I had on hand.  I have to say I’m so happy with the results. Ashley on the other hand wasn’t too enthused so I made her look at it again until sanity finally set in and she liked it! No pressure!

So now I’m challenging you!  Pick ONE…just ONE project you’ve been looking at forever in your house, closet, garage (fill in the blank)  and tell me what it is. It can be the simplest project you have on your list. Scratching one thing off is better than scratching NOTHING !!! So go ahead, tell me what it is and I’ll check in with you to see how you’re doing with it. If I have to quote stupid cliché’s I will.  The fun part is, if you don’t come through, this time next week, I’m totally blogging about you and how you didn’t do what you said you would. And if you do “FINISH SOMETHING”. I’ll blog about you and sing your praises…sound fun…well it does to me.  And if I get like two people I’m totally calling up family members and having them play along!

So what is it you want to accomplish in ONE WEEK????  Don’t forget to leave your email address so I can harass you…

Now GO!!

You’re very loving, up and at’tum Friend,
Rita
