Thrown Away Thursday- $5.00 Makeover

I guess you can see that I’m at it again. And for those of you who are new or visiting my blog, I’ll explain my madness!
Every Thursday I try to post a picture of something I’m working on that week. Since I work full time but have a small booth space in Downtown Dallas, I try to maintain doing a furniture make over at least once a week if not more.  In doing so, I thought it would be fun to post a picture up on Thursday of something I’ve picked up from yard sales, thrift stores, etc. Basically an item someone has “thrown away” and is now mine to refresh. It’s fun for me, it saves it from the curb, and it fills my booth. Win, Win, Win!
This also helps prompt me to get out there and get it done so I’m not empty handed come Tuesday.
Tuesday is “Tossed and Turned Tuesday”. This is when I reveal how my project came out(…or don’t and feel super bad about it) but for the most part, I come through.
My goal is not to show off with a “yay for me” or “pat on the back for Rita” but more so to inspire someone…anyone.  It’s simple really. Don’t’ take an item for face value. Anything can be changed to fit your décor. In fact, when Ashley and Brianna were little, they would watch Thomas the Tank Engine. One song they used do sing over and over was “Never Judge a Book by It’s Cover”. So if Thomas the Tank didn’t, neither should you!

Fist project for Thursday:

Good Things and Bad Things

I guess it’s really all in the way you look at things but in my case, these are definitely categorized correctly and you’ll see why!
GOOD:
Remember the other day I was telling you about my new camera and how I couldn’t find “good” spaces in my home, which got me thinking…hmmm, I need to clean up, I need new furniture and maybe a new house all together. Since none of the above are happening (with the exception of some cleaning) I figured the best thing to do is to start small.  How, you ask? By buying little odds and ends that are sure to put a smile on my face every time I see them. And that’s exactly what I did.
My first purchase was this TOTALLY Amazing vintage Ashtray.  Ok, no, I don’t smoke, but this guy was too precious not to pick up and use for something else! It was actually in my neighbors booth when I spotted it one day and fell in love! I told her I NEEDED to have it so she cut me a deal and gave me a discount! (LOVE YOU STACY!).
Now this vintage ashtray sits next to my kitchen sink and holds my sponges!

The Moment You’ve Waited A Month For

Wow if that isn’t tooting my own horn I don’t know what is, right ?!
Do you remember back before Christmas I showed you a dresser and nightstand I purchased from a church sale? If not here is a reminder:

Fun With Mod Podge

So easy, anyone can do it! So let’s get to it shall we?!

Rule #1  Anything can be updated! – What does this mean for you? It means if you see something at a thrift store, garage sale or flea market (or hell.. even the curb), don’t discard it because it doesn’t match your color scheme. If it is something you know your home can’t life without, remember you can always make it match your style.

Big Kid in a Candy Store

We all know the saying “it’s like being a kid in a candy store!” Right?! Well, I’ve never really fully understood that concept until the other day.
I work in Westlake Texas which borders Southlake. If your not from Texas, the easiest way for me to describe this area is it’s home to folks like Dallas Stars, Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers! Not to mention a few celebs like the Jonah’s Brothers! In other words, we are kind of off the map for the most part, but if you saw the sizes of houses in this area, not TOO far off the map.
Anyway, directly west of us is a small city called Roanoke, Texas. It’s a quaint little town and sometimes when we venture off to lunch we frequently go there. It’s nice to get way from our area and visit their little main street. Not to mention get to eat at places that should be on Diners, Drive-in’s and dives. They are that good!

So on our lunch trip the other day (we had breakfast for lunch and it was beautiful). We went down the main street as usual and saw a new building we HAD to check out!

Through My Camera Lens

Oh Snap Retro Vintage Camera 11x14 Art Print
I’m starting to learn my new camera and though I’m not near where I want to be, I’ve learned one thing for sure. Man do I have a MESSY house!! Seriously, I’m reading how to create vignettes in different areas, what to look for when your taking a picture, etc. so what does this have to do with my house? Let me tell you.

First Before and After of the Year!

Yay! Sooo excited to show you my first before and after of the year! Granted it’s a small one but it’s cute if I do say so myself!
First up: Thrift store and Garage sale chair. Yes I found them at two separate places. One for .95 cents and the other for .75 cents. One is also larger than the other but you can’t tell too badly.

The small green one on the right is actually vinyl. The one on the right is material and don’t barf when I say this, but I think I spotted a speck of ancient blood on it. gross!
Anyway I put them away for a rainy day this past month but when I received my Christmas present from my youngest sister – Olivia, I knew exactly what I was going to do with these chairs.

2013 Theme

I LOVE what I’m reading all over blog land. The need to simplify your life rather than loading on all these extra items to our “To Do This Year” lists. It can be quite exhausting thinking about all that needs to be done this year then the added stress of New Years Resolutions. Oh and did I mention laziness…that’s my problem sometimes.
But in all reality, this is what I have going on:
1. FULL TIME JOB
2. FAMILY TIME
3. LULA B’S
4. 4 ANIMALS (1 BEING A KITTEN THAT WEARS ME OUT! AND IS ATTACKING MY FOOT AS WE SPEAK)
5. DAUGHTER IN COLLEGE
6. DAUGHTER WITH DEPRESSION

I think that about covers it for the most part. Not that I’m complaining but it can definitely be time consuming.

I totally embrace the fact that you all want to visit “a few” blogs, people you know, etc. I TOTALLY GET THAT!  I’m so IN on that concept. I too have many I’d like to visit and comment on but man is that hard sometimes.
So my new years resolution for myself is to do what I can, when I can and try not to sound so boring in the process. I’m also working on figuring out the new camera so lets add better photos to that list.

Unfortunately, I’ll probably be writing a little bit more about my ups  and downs…forgive that… but someone’s got to listen right ?!

As for this blog, look for a facelift sometime this year and lots of new things to work on. I’ll be here and hope you stop by again!

Have fun this year,
Rita
