Thrown Away Thursday–Ooh La La

Oh no, where the heck have I been???  Well, nowhere really just taking time off and I may have a pretty fire place to show for my lazy non-blogging self the past week.

So on to my treasure!

This is my latest cabinet that I really want to keep for myself. It was one of the items I got from the craigslist caller. I’m not revealing her name because I totally forgot it, but regardless I love her!!

My deck looks disgusting I know but it’s on my “To Do” list so don’t be alarmed!

Isn’t this piece great?!!  I got it for $30 and it’s more than I’m used to paying but SO well worth it!!

I still get a kick out of the fact that pieces like these make my heart sing and all I get out of Sammy is “It smells like old people”. If we are not living proof that opposites attract, I don’t know who is!

If you are wondering what happened to the little blue piece I was working on in my last post (from the same person), well I sent her for repairs.  Two broken parts were holding me back from completing it so I told my father-in-law to fix it. So it’s not in my possession at the moment.

Tomorrow my baby turns 15 so HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIANNA!!

Tossed and Turned Tuesday–Not quite done but ….

Almost! I ran out of time and had to work all day Saturday so when I’m actually done, I’ll upload some pictures.  Here’s a sneak peek. Well it’s actually what I DID get accomplished.

So again, it’s a work in progress but you get the idea. Oh and I finally used my Annie Sloan Old Violet paint and it’s awesome!!  Love it.

I promise I’ll show you what it looks like when it’s not in pieces!

Also, I got pictures of Sally’s new table all fixed up in her dining room:

This is what it looked like in her dining room before she won my contest:

What do you think?

You can consider this a poll, I just want to see what you think. What if let’s say “Sarah” received a piece of furniture. And this piece was freaking awesome and vintage and you would totally drool over it…hypothetically. Then her friend “Jane” comes over and says she’s looking for something similar to what Sarah just received. Sarah says (with little resistance) that she has a piece that would probably work. Sarah then shows Jane this marvelous piece, knowing full well that Jane will jump at the chance to take it, but instead Jane says “Oh I’ll just see what it looks like after you’re done.”

What would think if you were Sarah?

Let me know…

Thrown Away Thursday- Craigslist called ‘Me’

Ok, have you ever gotten a call from someone who was going to put their stuff on Craigslist but called you first so that you’d have first dibs?? I’m talking total stranger here!!

Well I have!!  And I’m so excited about that call!!

It turns out that a blog follower of mine had to unexpectedly move and couldn’t take everything she had with her.  She said that she had two pieces belonging to her father that she’d rather sell to me than have them go home with some stranger. Which technically, I guess I was.

I was like “HECK YEAH"!!

She was so sweet and was so excited when I told her yes.

I took this piece off her hands along with a few others I found. In fact the pieces I got are still in the Explorer and you can’t see out of the rearview mirror, but it’s fine since we don’t drive it anyway.

So this is the first of four pieces:

It’s a small table that looks like some sort of mail sorter thingy-ma-bob. It only stands a few feet tall and the door is broken and it definitely needs some TLC which I totally intend to give it.

I can’t wait to get started on this transformation.

Speaking of transformation…

I’m sure she’ll be reading this, but one of my fav bloggers out there is Megan from Miss Madison’s Charmed life.  She is so inspiring and I don’t think she even knows!! I’ve seen her drop weight like no ones business and I can’t help get her new photos out of my mind. Not like that!! I’m not some crazy stalker person. But she simply glows!! She just makes me feel like I need to try!!  You can see her weight loss here. And keep in mind that the photo in that post isn’t even her now. She looks amazing!

I’ve gone over her blog and am like “where did she start”, “Did her legs feel like they were going to fall off or like she’d fall unconscious??” I do every time I walk from the parking garage to the front steps at work and it’s not really that far.

I’ve been told that we are about to move downstairs at work and someone measured the distance from the parking garage to where our new location will be, and it is almost exactly 1/4 of a mile!!  I could totally use this to my advantage.

So anyway, I see Megan’s running photos and say to myself “I WANT to be a runner”. I don’t want to run a marathon, I just want to know I can if I wanted to and not die!

So I realize I need more will power to get where I would LLLOOVVVEE to be and then I can sport awesome pictures of myself like she does without this overwhelming feeling like, “yuk”.

Then there’s my daily temptations…did I mention there is a bakery at work and a Starbucks? Talk about knowing where my money’s going. It’s all going there!! And my friends all love chocolate so we have an always filled chocolate jar in the office.

So yes, it’s hard but seeing her blog makes me want to get my butt up and run and I can be a “runner” and that would be so awesome for me. Today I got out after work and walked around the block …TWICE!! I didn’t even break a sweat but I felt better about myself. I guess that’s good. I also ran the distance of 3-4 houses and now my leg hurts but it’s a good hurt. It says I wasn’t lazy today.

That’s all I got folks. A little long winded but what they hay…sometimes you just need a friend to talk to!

Love you guys,

Tossed and Turned Tuesday- Sally’s Table!

I really wish the weather would have cooperated so I could get some good shots of this table (grrr). But you get the idea:

The top is now dark walnut and the bottom (believe it or not) is blue. Kind of a robyn’s egg but not quite.  I know these look like two completely different tables but I wasn’t finished when I shot the out side one and the weather has sucked so I took some inside. These two were the best Sad smile

When Sally won my contest she had this table in mind.

The look she had envisioned in order to give her dining room some spunk was something along these lines:

I can’t blame her, this is gorgeous.  It makes me realize something however. I need a good place to take a great picture (dang).

I hope you like the new look as much as she does. I’ll have her take photos so I can upload them.

Have a great Tuesday!! And hope you’re enjoying your spring break!

Wedding idea and tip!

What happens when you take a plate

And a bridal shower invitation?

This is what you get:

My mission was to  help my friend come up with an idea for her wedding shower.  She wanted her guests to sign something that she could hang on her wall rather than keep safe for years and never see.

We went to a thrift store and found the platter you see above.  It was yellow and had flowers painted on it before I started sanding it of course.

I already knew I would paint it white but we didn’t know what the design would be until she showed me her card that her friend made for her. This is the end result.  My friend loved it!

Total cost $5.00!!

Now I’m going to show you how you can do something similar.

First find a plate, platter, piece of wood…you name it !

I started by sanding down the flowers so you wouldn’t see the outline of the flowers when I painted it all. Oh and no need for priming, just give it a light sanding and spray paint it. (easy)

Now here’s how you’re going to get the design on the platter without having to freehand it. Don’t worry, it may be time consuming but it is simple to do! And you don’t need your circuit machine. I don’t have one! I want one…but I don’t have one :)

1. Take your design, for example the card I had on my computer screen.

2. Blow it up as big as you need it to be on whatever you are transferring it to. Remember it doesn’t all have to fit on your screen, you can do it in pieces.

See how it takes up practically my whole computer screen.

3. Take a piece of paper and hold it up the screen and start tracing. Not hard. You don’t want to ruin your screen.

4. Once you’ve traced your design, take your paper off of the screen and retrace with a pen or marker. We’re going to trace the back side of this paper and you want to be able to see the image on the other side.

5. Now flip your paper over and trace it once again with a pencil. This allows the picture to be replicated on your surface the correct way and not come out mirrored.

6.All you have to do now is put the paper, pencil side down onto your surface. You can either rub the image onto your surface with your finger pressing rather hard or retrace the whole dang thing one more time (I mean why not, you’ve memorized it by now) and it will leave a nice outline on your surface.

I don’t have a photo of it traced on my platter (sorry) but this is the side that should be facing you.

7. Your image is now ready to be painted. In this case I used a purple permanent marker.  After the shower I’ll take the plate and seal it with a spray enamel.

That’s the cheap and easy way to get this result.

I hope it helps and if you decide to do something similar, send me a picture!!

Have a great weekend!

Thrown Away Thursday - Second Contest Winner

I’ll be working on my next contest winner, Sally’s table for Thrown Away Thursday this week!

Isn’t this a gorgeous table??

The transformation Sally is looking for here is to add some color to her neutral dining room and this table fit the bill for the contest!

Make sure you come back to see what direction she wanted to take with it!

Happy Blogging!

What have I been up to?

I’m back and though I took a week off from blogging and furniture, I would love to say it was at some awesome resort, or vacationing, or painting furniture…but it wasn’t.  It was spring cleaning, preparing for Ashley to go to college, taxes, home owners woes…doesn’t that sound like fun???

It wasn’t by a long shot, but I had to get my head together and get focused.

Now I’m back and I still feel like I didn’t get a thing accomplished (isn’t that the way it usually works). At least now I can read blogs, blog on my own and finally…paint!!

This picture was taken this weekend at Ashley’s future college! (yay)

I also have a little before and after that I’m working on for a friend of mine. As soon as it’s done, I’ll share it here.

See ya later!
