Tossed And Turned Tuesday - $5 Chest!

Hope you all had a great weekend! I didn't get as much done as I'd like to, however we got this chest into it's new home in Ashley's room. Can you believe this is the same $5.00 chest I picked up from that garage sale!!

It is sitting in front of a window and looks great in front of the sheer drapes and adjacent orange accents in the room.

Let's take a look back down memory lane, shall we?

Before:

...and who could forget that blue material lining the drawers. Reminded me of an old pair of scrubs or something. Don't care...they're out!!

Instead I lined them with a great liner I found at the dollar store. The best thing about contact paper from the dollar store is they come in great prints and are cheap!

Lastly, my drawer close up!

Hope you liked my...er..well...Ashley's new chest of drawers!

It's amazing what you can create for under $10 if you keep an open (imaginative) mind!

Thanks for stopping by!

Thrown Away Thursday ~ My Five Dollar Find

CAN YOU SAY..."DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH"? I spotted this gem at a garage sale and am in need of one for Ashley's room. She has a newer chest of drawers that is falling apart. I tell you they just don't make things like they used to!!

The only thing wrong with it, is one handle is broken in the corner. It's not shown here because it kept falling off. But other than that it is one heavy, sturdy piece of furniture. And when the girl asked if I'd take it off of her hands for $5, I nearly screamed.

Let's check her out shall we?

Lovely pre-lined drawers:

She'll be painted a light color I can tell you right now, but you'll have to wait and see for sure!

Have a good Thursday!

Tossed And Turned Tuesday - Cutie Patootie!

Sometimes I see an oh so sad piece of furniture and think of all these possibilities for it. Sometimes just a small face lift and others, full on color!! You can see it was the latter in this case!

I had these awesome knobs I bought from Hobby Lobby and hadn't used. They were perfect for this piece so I took the knobs to Home Depot and got paint to match.

I lined the drawer with some fabulous paper from StellaDallas that I had in my stash. And thus this baby came back to life! Isn't she cute?

Remember her before shot? Big difference, huh?

Come back Thursday to see the chest of drawers I picked up for Ashley's room for $5.00.

Thanks,
Rita

Thrown Away Thursday ~ Sad Nightstand

Happy Thursday! Yay the weekend is almost here!!!!

(true story)
...so on Saturday as I was driving along the neighborhood streets, a whisper spoke to me, saying "Turn this way". Well I had to do it right... Then I heard "hey over here". Low and behold there was a garage sale right down that street. I didn't' see anything that struck my fancy so I did what I usually do when nothing really stands out... I drive by really fast! I didn't feel so bad because Lord knows I can stand to save money right now and avoiding temptation would be a good thing. But then I heard the voice again.

It said "hey come back here...you forgot me". All I could do at this point was turn around. So I did. That's when I saw her. This little nightstand sitting sad and alone at the garage sale I had just passed.

I couldn't just leave her there so I got off and asked the lady "how much?". She said "Two dollars". Two dollars is well in my budget so I took her!! I think I actually saw her smile. Well her because she knew she would get a makeover soon, and the lady because she thought she just sold me trash for two bucks!

Come visit me on Tuesday and see how she looks now!

Tossed And Turned Tuesday - Don't Judge Me!

You must remember that sometimes circumstances change! There are times that things you thought previously would work perfectly…don’t. Things that you knew for certain would fit an area… have a door behind them you forgot about…and now doesn’t fit.

Yep, that’s the predicament I found myself in with this chair. It didn’t fit where I wanted it. So the awesome chair with floral print is…yet again…an awesome chair with floral print. Hey I had extra white paint and this fabric…so it didn’t cost anything to transform but I was bummed that it didn’t work where I wanted it.

Again, lets look at what we started with:

And after:

Still a nice change but dang it... I wanted it to fit. (Damn closet)
See you Thursday. I have a small(bright) transformation coming.

Made By Girl

So I'm not a big fashionista by any means so mostly I live vicariously through those who are like my sister Olivia (By the way she is precious and you must check her out) She has her own blog and takes great photos of herself and wardrobe. Courageous I know.

But one thing you don't find too often is when you find a blog that incorporates fashion with real art work, like Made By Girl. Now the creative side... I Get!

She recently opened Cocoa & Hearts which has phenomenal paintings. Some of these actually have my head spinning with ideas for some furniture redo's. Maybe you'll see something there that'll inspire your transformations as well.

Just had to share!

Tossed And Turned Tuesday - India Inspired Chair!

Whew! What a week. First Mothers day, then teenage drama yesterday, I almost forgot to post my reveal pictures today.

So...does this scream "India Inspired" to you?

I have to say I could not find material that would go with this pillow anywhere!! Nothing really had that India feel and I knew It needed to be gold so I went out to a store near me called Namaste India and purchased a Saree. I took the pillow with me and asked the girl behind the counter to help me match it and it was perfect!! I have tons left over for my next project for Tarana. By the way she hasn't seen the chair yet so I hope I met her expectations.

I got all the wrinkles out with steam. You can see some creases here and there but it's fixed now. Here is a top angle so you can see the material.
Again, this is what we started with:

Hope you liked it.

Rita.

I'm posting this (as with just about all my transformations ) over at Cassie's Primitive and Proper for her Wednesday Link up Party. Make sure you stop by on Wednesdays to see the other folks that blow me away with their projects!!

My Mother's Day Story

This isn't your typical Mother's Day, heartfelt, "I love you Mom" Story. Just want to give you fair warning. No, this however, is a true story of what happened today.

I thought it would be a nice change from my before and after photos even if it embarrassed the hell out of me. Ok, ok, that and the fact that my coworkers asked me to post this for the world to see.

So here it goes:

Today at work I got a call from Ashley.

Ash: Hi mom, my principal wants to talk to you.
Me: How come (thinking it has to do with how awesome my child is)
Ash: apparently my shorts are too short.
Me: WHAT???
Ash: Yeah she said, they aren’t appropriate for school.
Me: Well what the heck kind of shorts are you wearing????!!!
Ash: Yours…

I don't think I've cringed so fast in my life as she handed the phone to the Principal. I was mortified.

Here are the infamous shorts~

Thank goodness she could roll them down to the appropriate length (2" above the knee). OH and yes those are the pre-torn shorts that I bought at the Gap. The Principal also mentioned the fact that they were torn. Good heavens I couldn't win.

Hope you enjoyed it. (Delia, Amanda and Leah you owe me one for this)

Thrown Away Thursday ~ Tarana's Chair~

Man this week is flying by!

If I haven't mentioned it already, I met this lovely girl who offered to create a website for me in exchange for some chair refurbishing! Uhhh...HECK YESSS!!

She gave me one of her toss pillows from her sofa. Her only hope was that I could take her existing cane back chair and give it an India inspired transformation.

Her sofa is red so this gold and red pillow really made my mind swirl with ideas!!
Come back Tuesday to see the this chair go from drab to India Inspired FAB!!

See ya later and happy "Grey's Anatomy Night" Thursday!

Tossed And Turned Tuesday - Adrian's desk!

Meet my nephew Adrian. He has his own room but is in need of a desk. His mom bought him a small desk, just right for him from a garage sale but it is really ugly!

He asked me to redo the desk based on his design(Be still my heart). Of course, I was up for the challenge!!

So we started with his design. He wanted it black and blue to match the colors in his room. This is the design he came up with:

He wanted a 3D looking desk with rectangles starting with black first. He even labeled the color pattern for me (so precious) !!

FIRST LETS TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE HAD TO WORK WITH:

1. The Desk (ugh needs some work!)

2. The Drawer (floral contact paper)

3. The Back- yes this is the back even though it has a knob. Totally WEIRD!

PREP:
I started off by removing all the contact paper and hardware.

Since the back part was attached by a "knob"(??) I took the knob off but decided to use the back piece since it was already cut to the size I needed. I used my staple gun to attach it and added Gorilla glue (picture came out blurry) to secure it down. It worked perfectly!

Then I filled the hole with wood filler and sanded it down.

I then sanded the entire piece. Even though it's not entirely wood, sanding helps the paint adhere. When I finish sanding I wiped it down to get all of the dust off.

After prepping it's ready for painting. In this case, I'm going to spray paint the entire desk black. I chose spray paint for two reasons. One, it'll adhere to this type of finish and won't come off when I pull off the tape for the lines on the top. Two, it's more durable than paint especially for a 8 going on 9 year old boy!!

PAINTING
I like to start at the bottom of all of my projects so I know I get good coverage all over. I begin by painting the entire desk black in light coats of black semi-gloss spray paint until I get a smooth covered finish.

Once the desk is completely dry I start marking off my lines with 3M removable tape. Keeping in mind that he wanted black on the outside, I put my tape there first. In order to keep the lines as even as possible, I took two pieces of tape and over lapped them crosswise. I cut off the access and it left me with a perfect square. I used the squares as guides to line my next set of lines.

Once the lines were all done, it's ready to paint the 3D graphic!

He originally wanted a darker blue howeverI decided that since the table is already black I would use the left over paint I used previously on his nightstand. It's a powder blue color so it may look white in the photos. It really set off the 3D look he was going for (not to mention it matched the nightstand:) Did I mention aunt's know best??

Before it dries, remove the tape. This way you can touch up or clean off as needed.

As the table dried, the drawer got a coat of the accent paint. Contact paper is no longer welcome in this drawer!

And THE FINISHED PRODUCT!

(I added my own touch to the drawer)
Much better back don't ya think?

Inside drawer!

He called me after I showed him the picture and said it was even better than he imagined! That's all I could ask for!
