The horse was in pretty good shape for being so old. I know this because if you touch his mane or tail, it would disintegrate in your hands. The thing that most interested me about this him were the huge staples used to hold his mane in place. Gosh they were huge! I ended up pulling them all out and filling the holes with wood filler.
This project was by far one of my favorites. It was so much fun painting this little guy. I'm sure it will be just lovely sitting in Lily's room.
Enjoy!

I have an old horse like this I wanted to make over too! I was wondering how you attached the new "mane"? Is it just standard yarn you used? I was afraid that yarn would come unraveled.
Thanks!
Hi Brynn,
The mane is plain white yarn. I tied 10 strands of yarn together with a knot in the middle. I hot glued the knot into the slit on top of the horses head. I made sure with a old putty knife that I had that I really got the yarn down in there so it wont come out IF it happens to get tugged on :)
Hope that helps-

Thanks, that helps a lot! I guess it doesnt have to be SUPER secure since it will mainly be for decorating the nursery and maybe a few pics :) I just couldnt see how to get a staple gun down in there so gluing sounds perfect!
Oh! Thank you so much for the idea! We have a very similar rocking horse here, with the same "mangy mane" issues. I may just go get some yarn today and start working on it. :oD
I just came over from Better After and had to post... this is too cute! It has my daughter's name on it too and I really wish it was for her! She has a little one at my parents' house but this one is much cuter, and it looks bigger which would be nice. I love your site, you are very talented. It's giving me some inspiration to redo the few pieces of furniture I own that need some lovin' (an armoire, a table and chairs, a buffet, and a desk!).
What a beautiful transformation! I'm sure Lily will LOVE her "new" rocking horse (what little girl wouldn't???).
Visiting from Better After!
So how funny is this!! Little did I know I was referring to your work when I did my rocking horse!!! (http://kammyskorner.blogspot.com/2010/12/rocking-horse-before-and-after.html) I saw it on betterafter and it totally inspired me to do a rocking horse! Just noticed today that it was yours! You're the best. LOVE your stuff!!!!
